5 Ways to Improve Your Smartphone Photography

Photography is a key component of running any business. Your customer wants to see everything from your behind the scenes to your products, but capturing them in their best light can be a struggle when you’re first starting out. The good news is, you don’t need to spend thousands of pounds on the latest camera equipment to do so. Your smartphone can do a perfectly good job if you know how to use it properly.?

Here are five things you can do to up the photos you take on your phone.?

Turn on the camera grid

One of the biggest things that sets a professional photo apart from an amateur one is the setup. If the angle of your smartphone photos is wonky, it’ll be the first thing your customers’ eyes are drawn to. Turning on the grid setting on your camera means you can align your images properly for a professional end result. Go to settings, camera and make sure the grid option is green to get started.?

Choose your focus

Every photo needs a focal point so it’s important you choose something to focus on. Once you have, you’ll want your camera lens to do the same. Tap the screen in the area you want to highlight and your phone will do the hard work for you.?

Adjust the exposure

Lighting is another key component of any image and, while there’s only so much you can do in this dull, winter weather, it is something you can adjust to a certain extent on your phone. Tap the screen and a yellow square with a sun should appear. Drag the sun icon up and down to adjust your lighting and frame what it is you’re trying to photograph.

Edit your photos

Editing can be the difference between a good and a bad photo and there are all kinds of apps you can use to enhance your image. From staple elements like brightness, contrast and saturation to more complex filters that can contribute towards a more consistent brand aesthetic, the possibilities are endless. VSCO and LightRoom are both beginner-friendly editing apps you might want to play around with.?

Invest in a tripod

Getting a clear image relies on having a steady hand –? not always the easiest of tasks on a smartphone. That’s why investing in a tripod can be so beneficial. Whether you opt for a full-sized one for larger, landscape photos or a handheld stand to steady your selfies, they really do make all the difference. There are lots of super-affordable ones you can buy online.?

Practice

Once you’ve tested out all of the above, the best advice we can give you is to practice! Find images that inspire you and try to recreate them. Photograph anything and everything you see until you find a way to take professional-looking photos that work for you.?
